Grow: Learning from Nature, Protecting Vendicari

Children who understand nature grow up to protect it.

Grow is a non-profit association rooted in the Vendicari area of Sicily. We bring children, families and local people outdoors to discover the wetlands, scrubland and coastline around them, and to learn how to look after them. We believe protecting the environment starts in childhood, and that everyone can play a part.

Projects you can support

1. Bees and pollinators
Children learn about wild bees, butterflies and other pollinators. They build small insect shelters and plant native species that help biodiversity thrive.

2. Migratory birds
Vendicari is a vital stopover for migrating birds. Through guided walks and careful observation, families learn about migration routes, resting and nesting sites, and how to watch wildlife without disturbing it.

3. Dens, nests and natural shelters
Every animal needs a safe place to live. On outdoor explorations, children learn to spot dens, nests and small habitats, and to leave them undisturbed.

4. Outdoor learning spaces
Help us build and improve spaces like our Rock Camps. These are outdoor classrooms made from natural materials, where children learn through movement, exploration and independence.

5. Mediterranean scrubland
The scrubland shelters and feeds plants, insects, reptiles, small mammals and birds. With children and local people, we discover native species, collect litter and raise awareness about wildfire prevention.

6. Little Guardians of Biodiversity
Through workshops and community events, children and adults explore how living things are connected, and how small everyday choices can make a difference.

Why Vendicari

Vendicari is one of Sicily’s most precious natural areas. Its wetlands, scrubland and coast support an extraordinary range of species in a delicate balance. Helping people understand this place is how we keep it alive for the generations to come.
